A nickel alloy, Hastelloy C22 is a useful component in the production of acetic anhydride. Acetic anhydride is a raw material for the production of aspirin along with being used in the manufacture of cellulose acetate, which in turn is the starter for the production of plastic. Generally, the production of acetic anhydride involves the occurrence of dehydration of 2 acids, and by itself, the chemical is a highly toxic compound. Hence, it requires materials that are resistant to failure such as the Hastelloy C22 Seamless Pipe for its production.
Moreover, this compound is easily hydrolyzed and therefore, the need for a leak-proof pipe is deemed necessary. Using resilient materials like the ASTM B619 Hastelloy C22 welded Pipe does not permit the vapors of this compound to spread around the environment. The chemical is produced by dehydrating a carboxylic acid, like acetic acid. Despite being a weak acid, acetic acid is a corrosive material and could easily decay the more conventional alloys, unlike Hastelloy C22 Pipe. As a chemical compound, acetic anhydride is also a highly combustible one. Not only is Hastelloy corrosion resistant, but the strong mechanical properties of the UNS N06022 Welded pipe ensure superior performance with an increased lifespan. Therefore, many acetic anhydride manufacturers prefer the use of Alloy C22 Seamless Pipe, because, in the long run, it proves to be highly cost-effective unlike regular carbon or stainless steel. These properties are attributed to the proportional addition of elements including chromium, nickel, molybdenum as well as tungsten. The C22 Hastelloy ERW Pipe could be used in an as welded condition, as it is not susceptible to intergranular corrosion, particularly in the HAZ or the heat affected zone.
