Grade 317 and 317L have the same chemical makeup. Yet the point of differentiation is the content of carbon and nitrogen in their alloy. While grade 317 contains a higher content of carbon as compared to grade 317L. Altering the content of a regular Stainless Steel 317 Round Bar can prove to have disastrous repercussions. However, this could be prevented by simply adding nitrogen to the alloy of grade SS 317L Square Bar. Most austenitic stainless steel alloys with lower carbon content need to be stabilized.
Not only are such grades weak, but they lack the strength to withstand corrosion. By adding nitrogen, the problem ceases to exist, because the SS 317L Pump Shaft And Rod see a noticeable improvement in its tensile strength, with the added benefit of having an extremely good response to welding. Though welding alloy 317 is easy, at higher temperatures, particularly in the chromium carbide precipitation range, where the temperature ranges between 800°F – 1500°F, grade 317 becomes susceptible to intergranular corrosion. But in the case of Stainless Steel 317L Hex Bar, since there is no free carbon to form carbide precipitates, the bar could be used in an as welded condition without any sensitization at the grain boundary and without becoming prone to intergranular corrosion. The higher content of molybdenum in Stainless Steel 317L Threaded Bar improves the resistance response of the alloy to stress related corrosion cracking in a much better manner as compared to austenitic 304/304L stainless steels. The UNS S31703 Bars resist getting decayed in the presence of highly corrosive solutions such as sulfuric acid, acidic chlorine as well as phosphoric acid. Because of this, the AISI 317L Bright Bar is favored for use in handling hot organic and fatty acids. Generally, chemicals like these are present in food and pharmaceutical processing applications.
