The use of UNS S31009 is predominantly used in the chemical processing industry. Usually, chemical industries involved in processing multiple products make use of highly corrosive compounds, which may result in an exothermic reaction. During an exothermic reaction, the level of heat given off is extremely high, and ordinarily used stainless steels such as grade 304 or even carbon steels get destabilized and they lose their properties rendering them useless.
These instances call for the use of high temperature alloys such as the austenitic grade 310 stainless steel flat bar. Alloy 310 has good resistance to oxidation. At elevated temperatures of up to 1040°C, grade 310 stainless steel can resist oxidation in intermittent service. And the oxidation resistance of SS 310S Threaded Bar in continuous service is at 1150°C. This particular stainless steel alloy is used in circumstances where sulfur dioxide gas or SO2 is present at raised temperatures. The UNS S31008 Forged Bar also has great resistance to thermal fatigue in addition to cyclic heating. However, manufactures do not recommend using the Aisi 310 Round Bar continuously between temperatures ranging from 425°C - 860°C. At this temperature range, the ASTM A276 Type 310S Flat Bar is likely to get corroded by intergranular corrosion due to carbide precipitation. The most appreciated characteristic of the austenitic grade 310 Stainless Steel Round Bar is that it exhibits good corrosion resistance properties in aqueous media. The high carbon version of Stainless Steel 310 Round Bar exhibits great resistance to the oxidizing atmosphere as well as a carburizing atmosphere. At temperatures ranging between 650°C – 900°C, the 310 SS Flat Bar is prone to sigma phase embrittlement.
