Alloy 254 SMO is an austenitic stainless steel alloy. Therefore the microstructure of the 254 SMO Round Bar consists of Austenite, which is also referred to as a gamma-phase iron. Alloys whose microstructure consists of Austenite, including the former alloy, are known to be highly ductile. And so it is easy to shape and form the 254 SMO Bar.
Austenite alloys are often regarded as sanitary, which makes the DIN 1.4547 Round Bar useful in applications involving the hospital, medical, pharma as well as food-service. Like most austenitic stainless steel materials, the highly alloyed 6 Moly 254 SMO Rod is furnished with heat by annealing to improve its mechanical as well as corrosion resistance properties. The most appreciated property, however, of the SMO 254 Welding Rod is its outstanding resistance to pitting. Unlike other austenitic alloys, this material has the highest PREN value, making the ASTM A479 UNS S31254 a well suited solution to marine engineering applications. With a high PREN value exceeding 42.5, and resistance to crevice corrosion the 6mo UNS S31254 Bar can afford the buyer with superior resistance to stress related corrosion cracking as well.
